The charm and seduction of the new 1898 Hotel lie in both the utter majesty of its architecture – a historical building found in one of Barcelona’s liveliest neighborhoods – as well as in its thorough, studied restoration, which maintained its original essence while incorporating some of the most elegant and modern trends in architecture.
The building, located in the famous Rambla of Barcelona, was designed in 1881 by Catalan architect Josep Oriol Mestres, and commissioned by the first Marquis of Comillas, Antonio López y López, as the Philippine Tobacco Company building. After undergoing a series of remodelings and expansions within the first three decades of the 20th century, the building was home to the company offices and several financial entities until just a few years ago.
Almost 125 years later, Nuñéz i Navarro hotels has refurbished the building, restoring the beauty of its façade and architectural details. Friezes, cornices, lampposts and other late 19th century elements adore the exterior of the hotel. It also boasts an impressive marble lobby, bath and spa area, and refurbished coal bunker, which exhibits the once typical Catalan half-barrel vaults.
The decoration of the interior spaces was left to the expertise of Rosa Roselló and her team. The interiors are elegant and captivating, composed of colonial-era touches, and fine materials. The sober, exotic style of the photographs of Maria Espeus further embellish the space, filling its walls in color and giving the 1898 Hotel an elegance that distinguishes it from other hotels in its category.
The hotel has 169 rooms, and offers its guests 6 different types of rooms, each with marble bath and shower, magnifying mirror, in-room music, plasma TV, satellite TV, safe and climate control.
