Hotel Granvia has served as the set for various movies and television shows, and its 19th century palatial atmosphere and décor has done wonders for various projects. Among them:
- “23-F: El día más difícil del Rey” (2009). This historical mini-series about the failed coup d'état on Spain during February 23rd 1981, consists of two episodes and was made for public Spanish Television. Produced by Alea and directed by Sílvia Quer, it features a spectacular cast: Lluis Homer, as King Juan Carlos I; Juan Luis Galiardo, as General Alfonso Armada, and José Sancho, as Captain General Jaime Milans del Bosch. Other cast members include Emilio Gutierrez Caba (as Sabino Fernández Campo, the Royal Secretary), Manel Barceló (as Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero), and Jordi Dauder (as General José Gabeiras).
- “The Chair” (2006). This Spanish drama, directed by Julio D. Wallovits, tells the story of a forty year-old man and his many fears and anxieties. Its cast features Francesc Garrido, as the main character, Ulises Dumont as the salesman, Gonzalo Cunill as a police official, and Francesc Orella as an artist.
- “Unconscious” (2004). An international co-production directed by Joaquín Oristrell, set in the modernist Barcelona of 1913, this entertaining period comedy reflects the sexual taboos of its time through its characters and the scandals they get into over the course of the film. Starring Leonor Watling as Alma, Lluis Tosar as Salvador, Àlex Brendemühl as Dr. León Pardo and Juanjo Puigcorbé as Dr. Mira.
- “The Greek Labyrinth” (1993). This Spanish film, directed by Rafael Alcázar, is an adaptation of Manuel Vázquez Montalbán’s novel of the same name, and features a spectacular cast: Omero Antonutti as Juan Bardón, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón as Bernadette, Eusebio Poncela as Jacques, and Penélope Cruz as Elise. Yet again, Barcelona has all the drama.
- “Un papillon sur l’epaule” (1978). This French film, by director Jacques Deray, was marketed in Germany as “Death in Barcelona”. A psychological thriller, it stars Lino Ventura as Roland Fériaud and Claudine Auger as La femme à l'imperméable. Deray, often referred to as the French Hitchcock, sets the mysterious scene in this unique Barcelona hotel.
- "The Burned City” (1976). Directed by Antoni Ribas, this film narrates the events that took place in Barcelona from the Spanish crisis of Cuba through Tragic Week –1899 through 1909– and follows the story of one family in the city. It stars Xabier Elorriaga as Josep, Francisco Casares as Frederic, Ángela Molina as Roser Palau, and Pau Garsaball and Jeannine Mestre in the leading roles. Supporting roles feature prominent social and political figures such as Joan Manuel Serrat, Ovidi Montllor, Núria Espert, Teresa Gimpera, Mary Santpere, and Adolfo Marsillach.
The hotel has also served as a spectacular backdrop in photo shoots for various magazines and publications, including Sposa Bella, Woman, Hola, and El País Magazine, and world-renowned photographer Outumuro has captured the beauty of numerous models and actresses in the hotel’s fine spaces.
